18th Annual American International Karate Championships
Tri-Combat Fighting
Competitors will fight three 2-minute rounds:
ROUND 1: Knockdown Karate

ROUND 2: San Shou /
Kickboxing
Protective Equipment
- Amateur boxing headgear.
- 12 oz. gloves for Lightweight & Middleweight competitors.
- 14 oz. gloves for Heavyweight competitors.
- Shin and instep protection.
- Groin protection.
- No shirts for male competitors.
- Spandex tops with cup protection for female competitors.
- Mouthpiece.
- Wrist wraps (no taping): 180 inch hand wrap & 12 inches of tape.
Winning
A fighter may win by:
Legal Techniques
- Leg kicks above the knees.
- Kicks to the front or side of the torso.
- Scissor-kick takedown around the waist.
- Punches to the face or side of the head.
- Punches to the front or side of the torso (between the shoulders and
waist).
- Hip throws.
- Outside leg sweeps.
- Leg-hook throws to the outside of the legs.
- Knees to the torso.
- Knees to the thighs.
Illegal Techniques & General Safety
- No throwing over the shoulder.
- No elbows of any kind.
- No attacks to the groin.
- No attacks to the joints.
- No attacks to the back.
- No malicious throws (any throws that put the opponent at risk to land on
his head or neck).
- No attacks to the throat.
- No Vaseline, baby oil, Ben Gay or any lubricant on the fighter's body or
equipment.
- No deliberately delaying the match.
- No unsportsmanlike behavior by the fighter or his coach.
- No intentional losing the mouthpiece or any protective gear in order to
delay the fight.
- No attacking the opponent when he is on the ground. (A fighter is
"on the ground" if he's touching it with anything other than his feet.)
- Fighters appearing to intentionally perform malicious techniques will be
disqualified immediately.
- The referee may stop the fight at any time to protect a fighter who is
being devastated.
- The referee may stop the action and give a standing 8 count if a fighter
has taken a debilitating strike or appears unable to defend himself.
- Running out of the fighting area will be considered a foul, and a
fighter may be disqualified for leaving the fighting area excessively.
- If the referee stops the action, the fighters must go to opposite
corners as instructed.
- Coaches may not enter the fighting area at any time; doing so will
result in immediate disqualification.
